Miniatur Wunderland – World-class model worlds

If you think that Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg's Speicherstadt is just a model railway layout, then you're in for a big surprise. After all, it is the largest of its kind in the world and attracts even those who are not particularly interested in modelling.

What makes Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg so special?

Since its opening in 2001, it has been constantly expanded and now offers over 1,600 square metres of model space with fascinating miniature worlds. Trains travel through faithfully recreated landscapes such as the Swiss Alps, Scandinavia, Italy, the USA or Hamburg Airport with real take-offs and landings in miniature format.

In addition to the attention to detail – with over 290,000 figures, 1,300 trains and impressive day/night simulation – it is above all the lively staging of the entire construction. Moving scenes, lighting effects, sound backdrops and even disaster scenarios make the wonderland an experience that goes far beyond classic modelling fun.

Every 15 minutes the day-night rhythm changes – with 500,000 individually controllable lights. Over 1,000 trains run, some of them fully automatically, plus ships, aeroplanes and self-driving mini-cars with sensor control. The technology remains in the background, but works everywhere. Anyone interested in the operation can take a look inside glass control centres.

Good to know: A new section on Südamerica has been added, and further expansions are planned. Another highlight is the look behind the scenes through open workshops and guided tours, where visitors can find out how the plant is operated and continuously developed.
