If you think that Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg's Speicherstadt is just a model railway exhibition, you will be quite surprised. It is, in fact, the largest of its kind in the world and even attracts those who are not particularly interested in model building.
Since its opening in 2001, it has been constantly expanded and now features over 1,600 square meters of model space with fascinating miniature worlds. Trains travel through faithfully recreated landscapes such as the Swiss Alps, Scandinavia, Italy, the USA, or Hamburg Airport, with real take-offs and landings in miniature format.
Alongside the love for detail – with over 290,000 figures, 1,300 trains, and an impressive day-night simulation – it is primarily the lively presentation of the entire building that stands out. Moving scenes, light effects, soundscapes, and even disaster scenarios make the wonderland an experience that goes far beyond classic model hobbyist enjoyment.
Every 15 minutes the day-night cycle changes – with 500,000 individually controllable lights. Over 1,000 trains run partially automatically, along with ships, airplanes, and even driving mini cars with sensor control. The technology remains in the background, but is felt everywhere. Those interested in the operation can peek into glass control centers.
Good to know: A section on South America has recently been added, with further expansions planned. Another highlight is the behind-the-scenes look – through open workshops and guided tours, where visitors learn how the exhibit is operated and continuously developed. |
